For personal reasons, your Speakers' Corner MC Andy Humphrey is not able to continue hosting and organising our regular monthly events beyond June 2018. Sadly this means that our session on 13th June 2018 will be the last outing for The Speakers' Corner unless new personnel come forward to take over the organisation of the event. We would like to thank all those who have made this event so special since 2006: our audiences, our open mic performers, our guests, and those who have shared hosting duties since we began.

About The Speakers' Corner

The Speakers' Corner began in January 2006 as a venue for the best spoken word performance from York, Yorkshire and beyond. This regular monthly event features poets, storytellers, raconteurs, stand-up comedians, even the occasional singer-songwriter. Guests at Speakers' Corner have gone on to win prizes in poetry slams and prestigious national writing competitions, while anybody who wants to come and perform is invited to sign up on the night for a spot in our hugely popular open mic.

After a year-long break during 2013 to allow the organisers to concentrate on individual projects, The Speakers' Corner relaunched in January 2014 at The Golden Ball, 2 Cromwell Road, Bishophill, York YO1 6DU which continues to be our regular venue. The Golden Ball is a CAMRA Heritage Pub with an impressive range of gins and single malt whiskies as well as superb guest ales. It is also a community co-operative, collectively owned by local residents who have made the place a focal point for community activities in the area.

The Speakers' Corner takes place on the second Wednesday of every month. Doors open at 7.30 for an 8 pm start. Admission is £2. Participants are welcome to sign up on the door for a 5-minute slot at our perennially popular open mic; please get there early to guarantee yourself a slot!

Our open mics have an entirely optional "themed" element. We are looking for poems, stories, thoughts and anecdotes on the theme for the month. The best contributions may be published on the Speakers' Corner website, with the authors' permission.

If you would like to be added to our email list, please go to the Contact Us page and fill out the web form with your details. We will not pass these to any other organisations and will only use your details to circulate information about poetry, spoken word and literary news.
